Last weekend, we stopped by the recently completed Newport Beach Civic Center by architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
Located blocks from Pacific Coast Highway, the project encompasses a new city hall, parking structure and public park, as well as an addition to the existing Central Library.

With any renovation, remodel or building project, repurposing existing materials, along with the efficient use of any new materials, is an important factor in the effort to minimize waste and maximize value during construction. Since we are often involved in a project from start to completion, this idea extends to the interior design phase as well, including furniture selection and placement.
Though we wrapped up our contemporary cottage in Laguna a few weeks back, there are always those finishing details that make it a home. So, we thought we'd share a few images of the recently installed reclaimed wood mantle above the natural gas fireplace. It adds a bit of warmth and texture to the space, and is a great size and scale for this open plan design.
Chances are, we'll never use this building system for a number of reasons, some quite obvious and others less so... Still, it's inspiring to see these innovations in material applications and technology, especially when they incorporate simple everyday products in interesting ways.
