Building a Modern Ranch Home: Sierra Madre Site Visit

Posted on by Lauren Moss

Under construction in the foothills of Sierra Madre, MYD's modern ranch home is taking shape; new images show the transformation underway since our last post from the project site, located just outside Los Angeles near Pasadena.

At the front elevation, the extension redefines the streetscape with a clean architectural geometry that takes cues from the natural sloping forms of the ridgelines beyond.

The new shed roof follows the length of the south building edge and further highlights the new massing at the exterior while enabling vaulted ceilings and increased natural light at the interior.

A sloping ceiling at the expanded kitchen and new living area brings north light inside, making the space feel even larger while offering beautiful framed views of the mountains, trees and skies beyond.

A corner fireplace near the entry visually grounds the open floor plan and connects the kitchen, entry and living spaces, employing an architectural language of exposed structural steel, clean interior finishes and open glazing.

At the exterior, finishes are in progress; the brown coat will soon receive a final coat of smooth stucco- a contemporary balance to the natural movement and warmth of the clear-grade cedar cladding at the entry.
