Interior Architecture + Floating Stair Details

Posted on by Lauren Moss

Architectural Interiors // One of the primary features of a contemporary residence completed earlier this year is the custom floating staircase that greets visitors at the dramatic double-height entry to the custom waterfront home.

Rising from a limestone base, a single asymmetrical structural stringer supports a minimalist palette of glass, exposed steel and white oak.

The balanced proportions of the offset design increase visual access to the adjacent channel glass wall, bringing additional light into the foyer while heightening architectural interest from all perspectives.

Sitting on the metal structure, white oak treads juxtapose the glass railing lightly connected to the steel with a series of standoffs.

The lightness of the stair aesthetic highlights the continuity of carefully-selected adjacent wall finishes- channel glass to the left and split-face stone to the right- as they extend from the exterior approach through the stucco entry and into the main open living space.

The resulting interior architecture allows for a subtle, yet strong, connection to the exterior, leading from the entry courtyard, through the foyer and toward the dramatic water views beyond.
