Cheers, Oscar Niemeyer!
This past week, December 15th to be exact, marked the 104th birthday of a favorite architect, Oscar Niemeyer.
Having spent a few months in Brazil after graduating from Berkeley years ago, Niemeyer and his work have had a significant impact on my architectural education, giving tangible meaning to the concept of 'tropical modernism'. Brasília was one of the most fascinating architectural sites I've visited throughout my travels, and it influenced and deepened my understanding of planning, modernism, and architectural theory- in practice.
Below is my birthday card to the legendary architect, just an image of a perfect moment- sketching his built world around me in the Praça dos Três Poderes, or Plaza of Three Powers.
Cheers, Mr. Niemeyer!
