This is a look at that early stages for a new MYD project; here, we're looking at the massing, roof slope and potential material options. These sketches led to what became the elevation design below, which will continue to evolve throughout design development.
As we move forward, we'll ultimately be working on the set of submittal drawings for the building department, which will look a little more like the image below.

In this application, approximately 350 square feet of California succulents sits above the main roof plane, allowing for light to enter the dining space below through clerestory windows. This change in ceiling height at the first floor dining room created an opportunity for a framed 'platform' for the LiveRoof system, enhancing the view from the second floor, in addition to providing the benefits of a green roof.

It was dusk when I first saw it, and the majestic building appeared to glow as birds circled high overhead... just beautiful. Though I could go on about the architectural, historical and cultural relevance of this building from an analytical point of view, why it has such an powerful emotive quality is more difficult to discern and express.
So... I can only try to hunt down all the 35mm film from my trip to Istanbul and in the meanwhile, share one of my favorite paper architecture projects. Enjoy!

We stopped to look at the Pacific Standard Time exhibit, Indoor Ecologies: The Evolution of the Eames House Living Room and, of course, to visit one of the most well-known homes in the discussion of mid-century modernism.
The relatively small exterior exhibit featured several panels of images and quotations that highlight the construction of the house in 1949 and the Eames' innovative and experimental approach to design, as exemplified in the evolution of their own living room. ]]>Master Bath, mid-constructionhttp://www.mydstudio.com/blog/master-bath-mid-construction.html[Lauren + Jason]2012-05-12T00:15:00Z2012-05-12T00:15:00ZIt's been a busy week over here at MYD... With a few projects under construction, we've been spending a significant amount of time on site lately.
For this multi-phase remodel in South Orange County, we've started work in the master bathroom, demolished and gutted a few weeks ago, with a new six-inch platform framed out along the length of the side wall in order to accommodate a floating tub and shower.
Already, the space has undergone quite a transformation with new floor and wall tile, custom cabinetry and a marble slab counter, not to mention new fixtures, custom cabinetry and lighting... It's definitely come a long way, considering the state it was in just a couple of weeks ago, seen below.
There's still a bit of work to be done before the space is complete, so more updates will be coming soon, along with construction images and project details.

We posted on the Erosion Sink by Gore Design a few months ago, and this week- now that installation is complete- we're back with some recent images, and it looks absolutely beautiful.
The extensive span of concrete is supported at each end and set several inches away from the steel-framed onyx wall (which is difficult to see in these photos; click the link for a better image...) that allows filtered light to illuminate the space. This detail enhances the intriguing 'floating mass' effect of the concrete, truly a work of art.
The wood element that wraps over the sink serves to hide the pipes and plumbing connections to the floor. By incorporating a dark-stained walnut used throughout the home, an element of continuity is added in the context of this very unique and beautifully sculptural space...

Thus far, grading has been completed and the foundation poured, and we're starting to get a good sense of the fantastic views that played a key role in developing the floor plan, in terms of orientation, space planning and locations of openings.

]]>Defining Space: sliding door systemshttp://www.mydstudio.com/blog/defining-space-sliding-door-systems.html[Lauren + Jason]2012-04-17T19:45:00Z2012-04-17T19:45:00ZA few weeks back, we posted an update on the reclaimed timber mantel at MYD's South Laguna contemporary cottage, and we're back today to share another interior feature of the design: a recently-installed sliding glass door system that enables varying degrees of privacy at the office, while still allowing light to enter the main living space.
This system, by Raumplus, consists of three aluminum-framed glass panels on a three track system, so that each panel can move across the length of the track. This allows for a variety of spatial configurations, depending on how much enclosure is desired, and allows users to determine the point of entry, or access into the space, for more flexibility in terms of furnishing.
It runs along the top and bottom tracks incredibly smoothly, and the flush track makes for a more seamless appearance. For a smaller home, this type of room divider is not only functional, but serves as an interesting design element- the glass adds a bit of reflectivity to the space, a nice counter to the wood trim at the windows and doors and the timber mantel.

With the growth of such sites as Google's Art Project, opportunities to explore art, culture and design are just a click away. One of our favorite sites to visit faraway places is 360.net, where users upload interactive panoramas of various sites, cities and places.
A favorite and particularly unusual exploration that adds surrealism and art to this interactive exploration is Nico Roig'sTribute to Escher, seen above. M.C. Escher, a graphic artist known for his 'impossible structures', produced one of his best known works, a 1953 lithograph, Relativity, where one's perspective is challenged by unexpected and unachievable representations of space.
This served as the inspiration for the multi-dimensional computer generated panorama, a world where gravity doesn't exist and the common perceptions of up and down are all relative... To view the full-size panorama, or if the animation above is having trouble loading, check it out online here.

Earth Day is approaching in a couple weeks, and to celebrate, we're revisiting a favorite green project- the Energy Lab at the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano, which we recently submitted for inclusion in greenroof.com's 'Love the Earth, Plant a Tree' living roof contest on facebook.
Entries include green roof projects that epitomize a strong relationship to the environment and are 'worthy of being an example of forward-thinking sustainable design'. We feel the Energy Lab aptly fits this description, and would love to bring some well-deserved attention to the value of green building and environmental education that this project represents.
